From the Valley To Lofty Heights

Variation 1 on the large Ötztal Loop takes you from Ötztal along a steep trail to Acherberg-Sennhütte. At the entrance to Ötztal-Bahnhof follow the signs on the main road to “Brunau, Ötz”. The trail soon makes a left and climbs through a forest. Continue straight at the first two forks in the road. At the third fork, which has no signs, make a left. Follow the road down to Ötztal’s valley road, cross it and continue to “Brunau”. Follow the Ötztal Mountain Bike Trail (easy to identify by the road markings) into the valley. At a junction in Sautens keep to the left – do not follow the climbing mountain bike trail! Shortly afterwards you continue along the river to Ötz (there are two signs for Ötz). In Ötz you walk to the swimming pools above Acherkogel lift. From here a wide road switchbacks up through a forest. Take the shortcut and continue on the trail which zigzags through steep terrain. Later you can once more choose between the road and a steep footpath – take the footpath to Acherberg-Sennhütte where you get a foretaste of the great views that await you at Bielefelder Hütte. Follow the trail in a northern direction up to the refuge where you are rewarded with magnificent views of Ötztal and the Lechtal Alps.
